               Maths Matters

Welcome to Maths Matters, our maths magazine. Each edition will include information about the Maths we do at DESS and a selection of fun activities to try at home. This time we have some problems to solve. Some are fairly easy to do, but others are more challenging. Have a try; get all the family involved; talk about ways to solve the problems. When you find solutions let us know and we will show some of these in our next edition. Don’t forget- enjoy your MATHS!

NEWS

In November 2007 Fifty five of our Year 5 and 6 children took part in the Primary Maths Challenge. After a very difficult first round, in which over 108,000 pupils from schools in many parts of the world competed, 750 children qualified for the final! Three of those children were from DESS! Noura Jawhar, Tariq Hilmi and Kinza Asim. Our finalists performed exceptionally well, representing DESS and Qatar with great distinction and finishing ahead of 99 .5% of all those who participated in the competition. This was a wonderful personal achievement for the three children and they should all feel very proud of themselves. The final accolade is reserved for Kinza whose efforts in the final have resulted in her being awarded a

  Gold Medal

She is the first child from DESS to win this award and the only pupil from a school in the whole of the Middle East to achieve this remarkable feat in the 2008 Maths Challenge. Congratulations to Kinza, Noura and Tariq and Well done to everyone who tried the challenge. Can we do as well next year? Now try the problems.  Have fun! If you have any ideas or suggestions about things to put on these pages, please let us know.

Mr. Edgar
